The good: HAPPY BIRTHDAY [profile] el_princess ! You were my first fest recipient, and a sweeter, better prompting recipient I could not have hoped for. I hope you have a wonderful day, you look fantastic, bring on the cake!

The bad: I live in a cool inner-city suburb, a few miles from the harbour, a few minutes from the chaos of Newtown and with a nice little village atmosphere, filled with cafes and the gay. A Vile National Coffee Chain, with strong links to a church that vilifies gays and even 'cures' them has decided to use my lovely little part of the world as the setting for their latest ad campaign.

To which I say, Fuck off, VNCC! We do not welcome your ilk here! You may have a shop in Newtown, but that's because Newtown is a painted Jezabel of a suburb, who will whore herself out to the highest bidder. And that shop is usually mostly empty.

Our cafes are filled with gays and lesbians who need no curing! And atheists! And Jews! And Muslims (well, the gang fron the greengrocer at least)! And very few radical fundamentalist Christians, not that we would not be welcoming and kind to them so long as they were genuinely Christlike around us! You would not like us, so do not come and appropriate our sweet and cool locale to popularise your Vileness that stands for everything we don't.

The fucking terrifying:
In Victoria, the fires are still burning. Forecasts for tomorrow are for gale-force winds. Winds bring down power lines. Power lines start fires. Winds also bring down trees, especially the ones that have already been burned in the over a million acres that have been burned out in the past few weeks. Trees block roads, preventing residents escaping and fire crews coming in. Gales stop water-dropping helicopters taking off. People in the threatened areas have been advised to evacuate early, and to keep track of the fires through the night.

My toes are crossed that the weather has a change of heart and rolls down to Antarctica instead. And that still days with long, soaking rains descend upon the state for a few weeks.

Your neighbourhood sounds really nice, I want to live there too! ;)

Though, that coffee chain sounds awful. >:(

And arg, not good at all. I'm crossing my [fingers&]toes with you!

It is lovely, we even have a little village green here people have been known to play croquet well into the evening. And it's Public Art Weekend again this weekend, which will be cool!

The Vile Chain is vile, even their coffee is dire and their sweet snacks far too sugary.

Thanks for the finger and toe crossing. It's just too awful to contemplate things worsening down there :-(

The finger crossing is working so far! Cooler, wetter and less windy than all forecasts to this point!

And the croquet is fun. The pentanque can get a bit silly ...

I have about 14 inches of falling snow I'd like to send your way...

From: [identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com
Send it about 900km south of here! Are you stuck inside? Are you sufficiently warm?

It's in the mail!

Not working today. I am inside and warm, but poor G had to trek through the snow today because I couldn't give him a ride: the parking lot hadn't been plowed, and neither had the streets.

Ooh, I do feel sorry for G today! Hope he had warm and waterproof gear on!

It's just madness. I can't believe that three and a half weeks after the big fires the situation has not really improved. The only good thing you can say is that there have been a few good says to evacuate on.

I have never seen anything like it.

Floods in the north, sharks in Sydney, locusts in the west ... do you ever get the feeling nature would just like us all to bugger off?

Fingers crossed that the weather turns kind and your dad is home shortly.

The crew are all back safe - had an easy couple of days, apparently, so maybe all the payers and finger-crossings are working :)

Your neighbourhood sounds fantastic! Hopefully Vile Chain will bugger off - not very likely, of course, since their ilk do tend to thrive. :/

But instead you can take your laptop out onto the village green-ish thing and read The Administration Series, which truly is a thing of beauty!

You cannot make me read it!!!!

Erko is fabulous. But horribly misrepresented on national television. This makes me sad. I might write to the Vile Chain and share my feelings, not that it's done any good the previous times I have written to them on topics ranging from 'Why do you support vile policies?' to 'How can your coffee be so ghastly?'

You should visit! We have spare cats!

Read it. Reeaaaad eeeeet! It's fabulous! Plotty, political and scorching.

You know, one day I'll take you up on that and come sleep on the cats and ogle your queers!

You will be very welcome! Hopefully one of the two bars with drag shows will have finished their renovations by then -- it was madness they did them at the same time. Though funny, because the Imperial set all moved over to the worker's pub and immediately the standard of pub food went up ...

The kitties say they would sleep on you, as a way of keeping you warm on frigid 16 degree nights ;-)

Date: 2009-03-02 03:44 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] pingrid.livejournal.com
Ha! Just goes to show that customer demands can make a difference! And don't worry, the bars will have plenty of time to get their renovations done. Who knows, it may even be enough time for you to clear the sewing room! Not holding my breath, though. ;) *glances guiltily at own sewing room*

Ah yes, those cold, cold winters you have. A hardship! :p I'd say we had about seven cm of snow during the night here, you can have my share if you like.

I have begun the sewing room rescue, slowly slowly ...

Our winters are silly, though the houses lack insulation, so you feel every bit of the feebleness ;-)

It must be horrifying to watch the fires and damage unfold in your part of the world. Like you I'm hoping the weather changes course, and lots and lots of rain comes.

As for the bad-Well that just really sucks, but hopefully as your little part of the world is open and loving and accepting of all, the VNCC will not find itself with many customers.

Yay for small liberal communities!!

Date: 2009-03-02 03:32 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com
Thanks for your wishes, I feel they can only help!

And yes, the VNCC has no redeeming features. Happily, no one from here bothers walking up the hill to Newtown where the nearest outlet is, we have 4 cafes within 50m and another three in easy walking distance, not to mention the three pubs with food, two Thai, one Chinese and one Indian, plus a chipper ;-)

I wonder if it's worth a poster campaign around their Newtown store reminding them that Erko has different values to theirs?

see now, this is exactly what molotov invented his cocktail for. poor, poor erko. next time i visit we can walk past and i will complain loudly and bitterly about how much standards have slipped since last i was there. i was much saddened when three large coffee chains (one now largly defunct, huzzah!) colonised my litle regional city (not that we had lots of fantastic little coffee places, but the mushroom-like growth of GJ, SB, and not one but two Hs in the cbd have done nothing to improve this). also, i am trying with all my might to send our cool, still, wet weather north to those who really need it (and who don't have washing on the line).

From: [identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com
Well, the nearest actual store is still up in floozy North Newtown, but their ads are set past the old Allens Cake Shop and on the station, and IT IS A LIE!!!! We would no sooner have them than the clap!

Boo hiss for bad coffee, and hurrah for sending rain to Melbourne and surounds!

oh, it is raining cats and dogs down here, and i am doing my best to will it further north (i really would have liked to get that washing dry!). it was now been raining (and it is a particularly wet, soaking kind of rain) for hours.

What a great little village, neighborhood you live in. I want to live in one just like only on this side of the equator and this side of the International Date line.

Not that I have anything against Australia, but hubby may not be keen to move. I can't get him to move across town-across the world would be bit much.

I think we will run out of water at some point, so that's fair enough ;-)

They do exist elsewhere, but you have to fight for them tooth and nail. I hope you find one, it's one of the most comfortable places I have ever lived!

National chain, so they have lots of other successful stores where people have no good cafes. I think the Newtown shop is more for show.

Oh Sis I haven't been around. I've been in alot of pain. I have mouth sores canker sores ulcers all in my moth and toothaches. YAY! for pain meds but they make me sleepy:(

Your lil village sounds so wonderful I bet it magickal at Chridtmas time.

but that's because Newtown is a painted Jezabel of a suburb, who will whore herself out to the highest bidder. LOL I Love it the description.

Everything's crossed that Mother Nature stops PMSing. You and Austrailia are still in my Prayers/Blessings and I took some more pages of links to Church last week and I'm taking more this week.
I Love You Sis *holds you*
