Oh fandom crazies ... how you make me shake my head ...

There is at least one person who reads this journal who sincerely believes I am anti-American.

I'm not anti-American, I'm anti-stupid American. Smart Americans are some of my favourite things in the world. Normal Americans are completely delightful and fill me with hope that generosity still lives in this modern era. But the stupid ones drive me mental, because in the face of every opportunity, they choose small-mindedness.

And it's not racist: I'm anti-stupid everyone. Which is not the same as being anti-thick. God knows I am thick when it comes to playing tennis, chemistry and about 50% of biology; I can't help it. We're born with our sundry thickitudes, but people choose to be stupid.

So, if you are a stupid American, then yes, I am probably anti-you. But it has nothing to do with the accent.

Being anti-stupid is a bit like being anti-gravity, it only works temporarily and then you're back down to earth with a bump

Not so! It is a lifelong philosophical stance, like Stoicism. Like Stoicism, I have made few converts and had little real-world impact proselytising it, but both colour my world view and help me to make reasonably dispassionate judgements about everything from my own actions to who I should vote for. Fabulous article in this week's New Scientist on just this topic, in fact.

I'm also anti-stupid American, and I AM American. It's this battle of self hate I have going on. ;)

I have always considered you a smart American, so I find it unlikely that you could be hating yourself. A few of your dafter actions, perhaps, but we can all sympathise with that! When you have travelled more, or met more people from more places, you will become anti stupid everyone: it's inevitable.

I do have my moments of not thinking, but for the most part I try very hard to consider other points of view, even when I am discussing something I'm completely ignorant about. Like astrophysics. Heh. I feel like a lot of stupidity the world over comes from people simply not considering the alternatives.

I think you are bang on the money there :-)

And OH! Astrophysics! I know just enough to know how very much I do not know! And yet have two friends and one ex-boyfriend who are astrophysicists.

Dammit! I was just saying above that I am not as good at physics as I ought to be! If I were, I would have SUCH a good joke to insert here!

Have this one instead:

Heisenberg is in a sportscar driving down Route 66. It's a gorgeous day, and it's such a fabulous long road. There's barely another soul on it. And the car just wants to go, who is he to say no? Suddenly, he hears a siren and is pulled over by a traffic cop.

The policeman leaves his vehicle and comes to tap on Heisenberg's window. The physicist rolls it down, and obeys the instructions to hand over his paperwork.

The copper shakes his head and looks at the esteemed scientist. "Professor," he says. "Do you know how fast you were going?"

"No," says Heisenberg, "but I know exactly where I am!"

LOL! I don't think I've heard a good Heisenberg joke (or even a bad one, come to that) for at least 15 years.

Scrolling backwards, I hope to find the origin of this somewhere; you're still the only person around who pointed out the double standards re. BP, I think of you each morning when I have to bring in the icky rag(s) the boss orders and have to read the headlines (I'm physically incapable of not reading legible print; so much for going blind, doesn't help there, eh?).

That was indeed stupid, though it was more stupid media, which is a whole other horrible category of stupidity.

And I have that problem, too! Damn seductive print taking up our useful brain space!

Despite journalists (still?) having become the only source of truth and justice that once were cops and now are vampires ... where was I? Oh yes, despite that, the majority of media qualifies it for the general stamp of stupid *sad face*

And what's worse, this horrible sheboss actively puts more annoying print in huge letters into the world that then spoils what little view I and others have left with inane blather aka ads. Brazil's ending was so tame and old fashioned, those billboards move around and you can't see the street, houses or people for them.

Good morning.

Part of the beauty of the US is being able to express your opinion freely no matter how small your mind is.

While I cringe at what comes out of some Americans mouths, the alternative of not allowing them to speak is unacceptable. However, this means I'm also able to tell them off without repercussions.

Unfortunately, unchecked stupidity can be dangerous.

As to being Anti-american. Well, we have a large megaphone so those stupid things tend to get heard around the world and should be commented on.

I am also anti-stupid for all nationalities, but it does get frustrating to me sometimes when some people act like stupid only plagues Americans.

I have to say that there are equally stupid (or sometimes moreso!) people in other countries all over the world.

I think it just becomes more apparent with us because we tend to yell the loudest.

A few pieces of American stupidity have been more globally important than the stupidity of many other nations, but on the whole, individual Americans do not dominate in the 'I choose a life of the stupid' stakes!

Having actually met you in real life and being actually a real-life American, I can assure anyone who may think otherwise after only having read words you typed into the internets, that you are delightful and certainly didn't exhibit any anti-American behaviors or sentiments.

There are many things grammatically wrong with that last sentence, but it's late and I'm tired and this stupid iPhone keyboard makes my brain hurt.

I think Americans take the cake in general stupidity, actually - and I say that as one. We're ridiculous and a laughingstock to a good portion of the world, and we never learn.

I'm with you on the anti-stupid. Form a religion, and I'm there.

I'm SNARKY this morning. I'd apologise but that would imply that I've something to be sorry for. Ha.

Besides, I'm all about the love. Not my fault they don't know where to get it from or are lacking in bollocks enough to take it. =D

HEE! You can also vouch for my general anti-stupidity -- evil Florentine gelato salesman!

Yeah, I have far too many American friends and far too many favourite American things, but by the same token, I'm not going to overlook the stupid just because it comes from a country I like. The manner of your customs agents, for example, grrrr!
