Because it bears repeating

In the broad church that is fandom, anon hate memes are the Westboro Baptists.

If you can't bring yourself to ignore them, make amusing signs, dress up as a super-hero, stage a same-sex kiss-in in response, but for the love of bunnies, don't let them get you down!

Hear, hear!

and that means you, Ella!!! ;D

ETA: It never ceases to amaze/amuse me that you can post an entry on one day, and I can comment on it the day before!!! Time travel FTW!!

My friend Jadzialove calls me her friend from the future, alas, no use for lottery results. I've just booked my flights to Italy: TWO Wednesdays! But, alas, I lose a Monday altogether ;-)

THIS. Amen, and amen.

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2010-09-26 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
We would so be in the Good Fandom Church Choir (it would be one of the ones in a nice old church with good old hymns, but breaking out in the occasional soul and rock number and be fine with the gays and the atheists ;-))

[identity profile] melusinahp.livejournal.com 2010-09-26 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
As I said to you before, this is the best analogy ever.

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2010-09-26 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I think we need to spread it. The nasties are making perfectly fab people sad, which is ridiculous. Fab people should be happy about their fabness!

It brings them joy, and since they are clearly not going to find that in genuine friendships or satisfying sex, we should let them grab it where they can, at the same time as ignoring them because we can. Unlike the actual WBC, who are more actively loathsome (though still unlikely to pull a satisfying shag ...)

i am completely clueless about this, and so, so glad for it. *hugs everyone* you are such a darling Brammers. we should have an open Love Meme to spread all the love.

I don't think I'll ever understand how people can find such pleasure in hate memes. But... whatever... mine is not to reason why.

Or some such shite.

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2010-09-27 12:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Look, I'm not going to begrudge anyone a good old whinge, but yes, anonymous hate-ins on the internet are, well, a bit sad. Having said that, I am vigorously opposed to any of my friends being brought low by them, because they are numpties, and my flistees are lovely.

They've just been making a few of my flistees miserable. But it's like having Tony Abbott criticise you, or being hated by the Daily Mail, one should in fact be proud that one is disagreed with by the numpties!

Don't look them up. They're depressing as fuck.

Wow, reading about them is just so... depressing. I can't believe they did all that - esp. all the picketing at people's funerals, that's just horrible. :/

I love bunnies. I love my part of fandom. I (occasionally) write happy (hoppy?) little fics. I read fluff (mostly). Ignorance CAN be bliss.

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2010-09-27 12:35 pm (UTC)(link)
People who don't like bunnies are beyond me.

I love fandom, there are a few mean bits, but we should all just ignore them and they will either go away or else enjoy themselves being bitter in the corner.

[identity profile] elissande.livejournal.com 2010-09-27 07:12 am (UTC)(link)
I got as far as googling the Westboro Baptists. The search results were depressing enough I didn't follow any of them. Haven't seen any hate memes either. Hope it stays that way.

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2010-09-27 12:37 pm (UTC)(link)
You and hate memes are not to be thought of in the same sentence -- nor are you and the WBC. In a nice response, though, the WBC has been bringing people together in anti-protests, which is good!

[identity profile] treacle-tartlet.livejournal.com 2010-09-27 11:14 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, poor darling [livejournal.com profile] ella_bane!

Though occasionally tempted, I have never actually read any of the anon hate memes. Nor do I know who the Westboro Baptists are.

On another topic completely, I have found a fandom for which I don't think I could ever write smut porn erotica. I simply cannot, cannot get my head around the idea of Cumberbatch's Sherlock shagging anyone. Which is a terrible pity, because he is utterly delicious.

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2010-09-27 11:24 am (UTC)(link)
I find it hard to imagine most Sherlocks shagging anyone. Which is balanced by RDJ's Sherlock, who I can imagine shagging everyone.

And yes! Particularly ridiculous because Ella is a darling. I foolishly peeked once, and had to correct someone who thought I was an anti-American bitch. I am an anti-Stupid bitch. Quite different! I demand accuracy from my haters!

The Westboro Baptists would declare Blondie's family dangerous Bolsheviks. Steer clear!

[identity profile] drbunsen.livejournal.com 2010-09-27 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Praytell - what is a hatememe?

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2010-09-28 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh it's the quintessence of lamity, and mostly centred in fandom: basically an anonymous community in which someone says, for example 'I hate XXXX (this being a specific and normal person, not a public figure), she's a stuck-up cow', and other people (presumably, it's all anon, so it could be the one person with far too much time on their hands) chime in with similar banality.

It's the fandom equivalent of being hit on by the really slimy mature-aged student at university: nasty and potentially traumatising, but in a way, it signifies you're having an impact ;-)

[identity profile] grrrreg.livejournal.com 2010-10-01 03:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I live in Kansas, home of the Westboro Baptists (I lurk here occasionally, hoping for more 'Fathers') and I can assure you that the vast majority of Kansans would support an action to 'delete the account' of the hatemongers from Topeka. Add to that the fact that we from time to time elect evolution deniers to our state School Board, and I have no time for anything but online apologies

Re: Yes, we know

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2010-10-01 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I have more Fathers written, but alas a magazine has eaten my life since July, will be back soon!

Kansas will forever be a land of decent people, flying houses, Very Exciting Weather and broad spaces in my mind, not responsible for the WBC, who are like a sort of tinea that sprang up on an otherwise mostly healthy body. And, of course, you represent the populace well :-)
