NEVER AGAIN![Poll #1662253]And a tip: if you are working very hard, do not put on any music that has lyrics, as you will listen to them, and the results may be unpleasant!
It's all right, this poll is not used to generate data for the news. Though, given I will be checking respondees against the group I am polling, it is probably going to be slightly more accurate than the ones that are!
And so far you are the only Toast Done On One Side person!
I have no idea why toast would only be done on one side? You don't get much choice with toasters I suppose, but under the grill or over the fire I suppose one side could be done significantly more than the other ...
I also filled in the poll without noticing I was meant to be English. Of course, as an American, I am not picky about toast and like both coffee and tea! It's also 6:30 in the morning here and I would like both coffee and tea, right now.
Not liking hot chocolate is such an alien concept to me that my brain cannot deal with it. It's like not liking David Tennant ...
I think it was meant to be all about Quentin Crisp, and I can sort of see it if it is 1950 and you have one of those old flippy toasters that only did one side at a time, and you were impatient ... but to declare that you both liked it and that it was a defining cultural characteristic seems a bit much!
Tea I can drink but don't see the point of. It's not a taste I particularly need in my life. My dad is hooked on it and drinks it every hour he's awake. I had to specifically buy teabags for his staying over at Christmas!
I do like herbal tea but make it and let it go cold before I drink it. I never put ice cubes in it, I don't do iced tea.
Hot chocolate is nice, I have it once in a while, but I always prefer something else when I'm considering what to have. I've stood in Starbucks where they do really good hot chocolate and ordered a bottle of fruit juice.
I'd always prefer to drink fruit juice than a hot drink.
I'd also prefer to drink a flat fizzy drink than a hot drink!
How are you going to prevent us deprived non-Brits from partaking in your poll? We all live in a yellow submarine, yellow submarine, yellow submarine (mine's a tea egg, so it fits both your poll and your warning; maybe the results weren't unpleasant because I am not working hard enough?).
ETA: uh, btw, you might be interested in knowing that I actively toast only one side when I make myself a shoddy "hamburger". Though my toaster has a one side option, which boggles the mind, I do it by putting two slices into one slot, so only their outsides are toasted. This is where the hot burger, melty cheese and watery vegetables are placed not to soak through. The softer side saves my palate from crumbly injury (happens a lot), so it goes on the outside. Only in this particular case though, I don't think I've done any cheese or ham toasts with soft outside. Hm. I wanna hold your haaaaaaaaaaaaaaand (which you won't if you knew my view on the man you compare to chocolate mwuah).
Not being English or raised to think of toast as a kind of food (seriously, what is that?), I nevertheless contributed - what can I say? I cannot refuse a poll, it's a disease.
But since you seem to be the most knowledgeable flister regarding English things - what does one do with a pot of gourmet quality lemon curd? It was a gift, and... I have no idea what to do with it.
I know. I made some lime curd a couple of months ago, and I had to exercise some SERIOUS willpower not to polish it off - a whole litre - in a couple of days. *facepalm* And I wonder why I never lose weight...
Hmm... does English, but has lived in other countries far too long count?
Toast on both sides... I don't understand how there can be a question.
Tea, of course, unless I'm at a restaurant or someone's home in this new world, in which case coffee is always the safest bet because the tea is usually heinous if hot.
Not having an option that says 'No! Tea only, coffee tastes like the sweat from Satan's armpits', I had to click 'No! Tea only, coffee smells like Satan's armpits'. I love the smell of coffee, but it tastes vile.
... Although I feel really guilty for my answers, as Sting is (and always as been) almost my biggest hero (only beaten by Admiral Nelson and David Beckham). And this is my favourite of all his songs. But you're right, it makes no sense :-)
I'm not actually English but have lived here for 19 years. Although I have happily adapted tea w milk & sugar (I am regularly dismissed as a philistine by the "black tea no sugar" Danish community here) toast done on one side is just plain wrong.
This song has always amused me - I must have heard it whilst still living in Denmark and didn't realise that alien does not only mean beings from outer space. I'll leave you to imagine my interpretation of the song...
I have toast done on both sides unless I'm doing cheese on toast, in which case I will toast one side, then put the cheese on the other side and stick it under the grill. As my youngest would say, I can't like overdone toast. I think Sting is just plain odd.
expat Brit here. Toast is only toast if done on both sides, and I agree with the poster above - tea only for drinking but coffee smells nice! Hope all the flooded people and animals up north are safe. Australia must be the country/continent most affected by extremes of weather
Tea always. Various herb teas are also acceptable if they are in good condition. Coffee smells nice but tastes rather horrible, and is best drunk (black and strong, no sugar) when accompanying very sweet Middle-Eastern, Eastern European or Latin American pastry, when it actually makes sense.
Both the foul, synthetically-flavoured quasi-desserts commonly imbibed in the US and the weak, camel's-pee infusion made from green coffee beans that is served in some parts of the Gulf have nothing but anthropological interest to recommend them.
Toast toasted on one side in one of those old-fashioned flippy toasters has a certain retro charm. I don't mind eating it if it is offered to me, and it produces a nice contrast of texture when made in a toaster oven with grilled cheese.

I like hot tea and cold/ice coffee. I also enjoy a shot of coffee in my hot chocolate.
Aren't you glad I shared all this useless information with you? I just can't resist polls.

But there are few joys as nice as tea and toast.
