WTF Australia??

Guess what natural disaster is currently rampaging across the top half of New South Wales?

Go on, guess!

Did you guess flood? A gold star for you.

Now guess what the latest threat from the fires down in Victoria is?

Contamination of Melbourne's very marginal water supplies.

Oh Australia, you are so hilarious!

An update post on the Victorian fires later tonight, and for anyone wondering when the plague of locusts is going to descend, that was last November.

But you already had crocodiles, snakes and spiders.

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2009-02-17 08:25 am (UTC)(link)
You forgot the box jellyfish, blue ringed octopus, stonefish and scorpions.

Why am I here??!

Well, at least the people are mostly decent and pleasant to be around. It's as though they're compensating for Nature ;-)

Honestly, don't mention the toads.

We've already had to kiss Queensland and New South Wales goodbye.

mere is right about the toads ...

Happily the only rain of blood has been Red Cross donations.

One of the reasons I left NSW was because the locusts kept eating my garden. *cries*

Honestly, if you didn't live here, you wouldn't really believe it, yeah?

*headdesk*

WTF Huey!

*makes flaily fists at sky*

I have grasshoppers noshing away here. Little hopping buggers.

I used to be very blasé about things and was often heard to say 'Oh, in Kenya ...' or 'Oh, in India ...' or 'Actually, in Wales ...' But over the last few years I have been forced into the realisation that Australia is just bloody weird.

Au contraire, you got Jackie Chan!!

And don't worry about the locust miss, it is an accepted fact of life in the journo trade that no one reads past the first few paragraphs ;-)

At least when it comes to making small talk at parties, the weather is actually an interesting subject... also, guaranteed job security for meterologists and climate scientists.

Both more in the small mercy category rather than the saving grace.

Maybe the Murray Darling system will fill up and the good people of Adelaide will have some water for a change?

I was halfway through a big fire update post when the news came through that a firefighter had died when a tree fell on his tanker. And I just had to stop and have a little rant at the universe.

This is one of the reasons I am an atheist, because I want the Christians and Muslims and Jews I am friends with to feel they have a great and powerful god, who is, in most cases, merciful and just. Whereas the world I live in could only be explained through a theistic view as being governed by one sick fucker.

Maybe the Vikings were right and just put Loki in the wrong part of their pantheon ...

*is glad to live in Canada*

Austalia is the land of the fearless, isn't it? I have many fears. Especially spiders. I think I'll stay here where the biggest threat I face is the squirrel on the laundry line and the raccoon on my neighbours roof who won't come down if the backyard light is on...

Anyway, I was just thinking about you last night and wondering how you were doing. :)

The only time I watch the news is when Im at work, but gosh Australia really is getting it all isn't it, well our side of the map anyway. I hope the floods aren't affecting you too much.

More people should live in WA, I keep saying this. It is nice here, and the toads are still very far north.
