Guess what natural disaster is currently rampaging across the top half of New South Wales?

Go on, guess!

Did you guess flood? A gold star for you.

Now guess what the latest threat from the fires down in Victoria is?

Contamination of Melbourne's very marginal water supplies.

Oh Australia, you are so hilarious!

An update post on the Victorian fires later tonight, and for anyone wondering when the plague of locusts is going to descend, that was last November.

But you already had crocodiles, snakes and spiders.

You forgot the box jellyfish, blue ringed octopus, stonefish and scorpions.

Why am I here??!

I saw a program on Australia once, where all that happened was people walking bare foot on the beach and then treading on something and dying.

I think it was sponsored by the shoe industry.

I was traumatised just watching it.

Yeah, don't laugh. I used to swim in the ocean through much of the year when I lived in England. I can count on my fingers the number of times I've done it here.

Probably because one of the first times was a good long swim between some islands that had been joined by a sandbank which no one thought to mention was well under water when the swiftly turning tide came back in. The swim itself wasn't a problem, I still hold a long-distance record at one of my old schools over 25 years later. What put me off was the chorus of 'But what about the sharks?' from all the Australians when I made it back to the original island.

Could none of them have mentioned the shark situation hours before when I mentioned I was going for a walk and paddle?? Bastards.

Bastards indeed.

Obviously you only laugh in relief and appreciation for my plucky British swimming skills that were too swift for Antipodean sharks, yes? Right?

Mr Malfoy is pleased by your admiration and wonders if you have some money or power you'd like to send him as a token of your appreciation?
