Are you Italians out there all right? That is very bad news, and getting worse as reports roll in. I hope that you and your loved ones are all safe.

Thanks for asking Blame :)))

Here in Rome it was a long, long shake it gave us, but nothing serious, especially compared to the people in L'Acquila.
20 people died, 30 are missing and 5 childs are in the number of deaths.
All very sad. People lost their homes.

It woke us up at 3.00 am.
My husband went: "Wow, what's going on"
Me (in a soothing tone): "Don't worry honey, stay calm it's only an earthquake" ... I know... twilight zone... the things one says without thinking.
Then I got up and went to my son's room to get some clothing and a blanket ready, just in case we deemed necessary to leave the flat. While I was at it I decided to put on him socks, so he could be ready to transport.
He looked at me, sleepy as he was, and asked why I was putting socks on him (he's 7). I answered reassuringly: "there has been an earthquake, love." he looked at me and said: "you put socks on when earthquakes happen?"
Ain't children just fantastic?

Oh! He is adorable!

I am glad that it seems to ave been very localised at least, but yes, the death toll and loss of homes is terribly sad. I hope that people are able to be rehoused quickly and that the earthquake has not destabilised too many buildings.

And you are so organised while half asleep!

Oh, well... some practice we have had with that in the '70s. Earthquakes happens in Sicily... you know with the volcano right there on our doors.
Most of them were only false alarms and we ended sleeping in the cars for nothing, most nights.
When I was like 12 I was sleeping at my Gran and woke up in the morning to find her dressed in bed.
And wearing all of her jewels too.
It turns out there had been an earthquake during the night but I had simply refused to get up, saying in drowsyly that it was going to be a fake for sure and I wanted to sleep in peace and to leave me there.
Since I was too heavy already to be carried she had to stay.
All the aunties were down in the street calling at my Gran, shouting to get down, and she was at the windows telling them: "I can't get down! Can't leave the child and run!"
Poor Gran.
And then the next morning I waked her up and said:"what are you doing in bed with your clothes on?"
And she wanted to hit me she had quite got a heart attack being trapped there with a stubbornly sleeping girl! LOL!

Oh dear! Stromboli, terrifying innocent grandmothers for generations ...

Your Gran was very cool in the circumstances, though!

(On an unrelated note, have you seen the YouTube video of the Queen and Berlusconi? Oh dearie dear!)

That would be Etna. :)))

My Gran was the coolest person. She was this incredible old noble woman with so much dignity I'll never put togther should I live to be a thousand. Any Malfoy would have been jealous of her rised eyebrow and haughtyness.
But she loved me dearly and would have done anything for me. See... I was the eldest of her grandchildren, and she felt specially for me, although she would never, ever admit to it.
She had me sleeping in her bed on saturdays and serve me breakfast in bed on sunday morning, herself.

>(On an unrelated note, have you seen the YouTube video of the Queen and Berlusconi? Oh dearie dear!)

Please, please... don't mention Berlusconi to a poor individual who happens to be in some odd rational, political minority!
How can we get rid of the man? I'm desperate!
He's a political disgrace. Not to mention his etiquette.

I knew that. It's 1am here, I am very sleep deprived. (and on top of being hopeless at geography, the smack to my head with a taxi means that I can never get the right name in the right place, I am bad enough with people)

Your grandmother would probably look at you and say that she would want to be like you, too. And I am sure that you will be very much like her by the time you have grandchildren!

As to Silvio, I say let him misbehave around the Queen a little more. She is a dab hand with an attack corgi ;-) (He really is awful, and quite mad!)

Go corgies!!!

The bad news:
over 170 people dead and more than 1500 injured.
more than 100 missing yet.

The "good" news:
people is still found alive under the debris after 23 hours.

The real problem will be to give shelter to all the people who lost their homes.
I know Italy has real issues with those kind of things.
:(((

If you are interested in understanding possible causes of this quake, my friend [livejournal.com profile] tectonite has a science blog which talks about it.
