Sometimes things happen and although you can point to lots of facts and reasons, none of those satisfy your emotional need for hope and consolation. Which is why I am glad I am friends with [livejournal.com profile] oncelikeshari, who wrote this, which is kind and beautiful.

Thank you for the link. I didn't know that about Andy Murray. The photos are wonderful. I have three small boys - one who is just finishing his first year of school and one who'll be starting next year. Being in Australia, I don't ever worry about them being shot at school. I cannot comprehend, have never been able to comprehend, why gun control is such political poison in the USA that it seems hopeless to want things to change with every one of these horrific events.

I can remember exactly where I was when I hear about Port Arthur. I can remember how I heard the news, where I was standing, what the weather was like that day, the numbness I felt walking home. I can still recall many names and details of victims. It was such an exceptional event in Australia. Getting the laws changed seemed an inevitability.

Half my comment disappeared. I went on to say that I know I'm coming from a place of grief and horror, but every time I hear about something like this in the USA (and it horrifies me that it has happened so many times that even the names of the places it has occurred in start to blur in my mind), I just can't understand how parents there can stand to hear lines like 'guns don't kill people, people do'. That line makes me feel like vomiting.
