Date: 2013-01-24 10:42 am (UTC)I think it has cost the last of my sympathy for the US's outrageous persecution of Assange, though I still feel it for Manning and am still outraged for the late Swartz (NB Assange sympathy came with outrage for his naming of Afghans who had assisted the US, because that was not upholding freedom, that was being a lazy twat and endangering lives. God, he even ruins clear-cut stances on political issues! DAMN YOU, ASSANGE!)

Date: 2013-01-24 11:40 am (UTC)It is difficult to like Assange. It is easier to like Wikileaks. No one believes either the US aor the Swedish government, which is a pity for the women involved, whose veracity is being cast into doubt by the actions of governments. (No idea if Assange is guilty or not, but I can understand him taking it on the lam even if totally innocent,)
And the Cumberbatch hysteria turns me right off.

Date: 2013-01-24 01:58 pm (UTC)I was talking about this with Mr B earlier and we agreed that the thing that we don't like is that Assange has basically run roughshod over the legal rights of the women involved, because he is A Hero and they are probably Pawns in his narrative. It's certainly not only the governments involved who are putting them in a bad light.

Date: 2013-01-24 12:43 pm (UTC)That being said - I think making a movie about Assange at all at present is ridiculous. There's too little real information (lol, ironic that, really) and definitely too little truth going on, and given that his situation legally / politically is still such a mess, it's hard to know which side of the fence the ultimate verdict regarding his role in so many things will be.
Ah well - there are worse things in the world, like the running time of the Hobbit film, and global warming (it's possible I see these as equal evils).
I hope spare cat is relaxing a bit? Must be very distressing for the poor little thing - uprooted from home and hearth and dumped with a load of angry strangers, not to mention strange food tin openers and petting devices.
:)

Date: 2013-01-25 02:42 am (UTC)I took as my motto when very young, "An idea is not responsible for the people who believe in it." It's served me well; I wish I could remember where I first heard or read it. I don't care for Assange at all. The piece reprinted below where he complains about "irresponsibly" leaking things about HIM was a laugh, but not terribly surprising. Everyone wants heroes, and that means whitewashing of who they really were -- Washington and Jefferson here, Martin Luther King Jr. more recently, ad infinitum. It makes me want to stand outside history and just watch. Having something like Wikileaks is, however, valuable, despite its flaws, if for no other reason than to discover that a government will censor ANYTHING which reflects badly on it, no matter how much right the people have to know and how little impact it will have on national security.
I loved your headline and laughed a lot. The picture does indeed prove it.

Date: 2013-01-25 09:16 am (UTC)Too true! I wonder if the film actually IS "a Christ allegory in which the prophet of truth is forsaken by his disciples and crucified by Swedish justice", which makes this kind of sci-fi.

Date: 2013-01-27 06:10 am (UTC)Oh, and btw- hi there, I've been incommunicado for ages but I think of you frequently. That care package you sent these many moons ago lives on. I'm still using the body creme and Lucy (who is now 2.25) plays with the bunny all the time. She is "Mama Bunny."

Good lord, Lucy is growing quickly! Stay shorter than me until you are 10, Lucy, and you will get a present!

Date: 2013-02-10 08:46 am (UTC)My only comfort is that Assange says the film is an "attack". Hopefully in that it portrays Manning as a sympathetic hero-type and Assange as a twat.
