It was a mere 30 or so here today, quite thoroughly bearable. In Adelaide, the city of churches and blessed public pools, it was nearly 46 degrees Celcius. That is over 110F.

THAT IS INSANE!!

Melbourne was a balmy 42 by comparison, and neither city is scheduled to drop below 40 during the day for the next several days, nor far below that at night.

Poor old Canberra is nearly as badly off.

Feral, Mere, Jamie, Emerald, and you Adelaideans, HIDE IN THE FREEZER AISLE AT THE SUPERMARKET!!! Stop pretending it's bearable, it's completely not! Hell, come up to Sydney for the week, it's passably reasonable here.

Finally, HAPPY BIRTHDAY [personal profile] separatrix !

What's the latest with the air conditioner? Were you able to get the bars off?

Yes! And it is lovely and cool for the study and bedroom at least, and the hallway in between. The cats have taken to stretching out there at full length. But we have not suffered so badly as the South, where there are big bushfires moving towards the cities, too. Horrible stuff.

Brushfires... that's what I grew up with in the hills of Southern California. Scary indeed.

Yes, that's why I moved to the inner city after some little time when I first came to Sydney, and six weeks later my old and unlet house on the leafy North Shore burned to the ground ;-)

Thank you! But you know, I am sending it south. It's uncomfortable here, but it's deadly there. Just madness! I hope that the front doesn't reach us, I believe there's a gale blowing it downwards, for once I say hurrah for the gales!

46 degrees is not funny. Jandals start melting to the footpath at 40!

I will now encourage all the Britishers to appreciate our perfectly reasonable 3-10 degrees.

46!!!!! O.o

Oh what I wouldn't give for an English winter right now. I'd even settle for a Scottish one ... at least Sydney's 40 degree weather sat on 40 and 42 and then went down to 28 or 25 at night, I believe Adelaide is going down to 30+ at night, madness!

And they wonder why Australians are all so barking mad.

I can't get over the crazy weather this Summer! It's usually up here in Brisbane getting some high temps, but it honestly hasn't been all that extreme... Hope that doesn't just mean it's going to be coming up here soon!

Those temperatures are just ridiculous. I hope there's a cool change coming for anyone in those places!!

My friend moved from Adelaide to Brisbane and was bemoaning the fact that she was going to find it hard. Now she is LAUGHING. Bless ...

Apparently we are going to be spared the worst of it, but may have more rain and wind. I can live with that ...

Even 30 is excessive...

That's it, I'm sending you all the snow in my yard.

I haven't heard anything on the news about Australia suffering abnormal heat waves but obviously this is, uh, Day After Tomorrow-ish.

Hang in there!

It was the third-hottest day ever recorded in Adelaide today. Not quite horror-movie-esque,l but if you start hearing about people spontaneously combusting, they probably live over this way.

30 is icky but doable. 40 is painful. 46 is sheer madness. The weather bureau assures me it will remain only mildly revolting here for the next few days, after which I am off to New Zealand!

hehe i just read 3 consecutive posts by australians re: the insane weather! here's hoping you get some mild temperatures soon, and that we canadians get the heat instead! it just snowed continuously for the past 14 hours, and it's not going to stop for another 8. I HATE YOU, GLOBAL WARMING.

Honestly, I use my powers for good and introduce you to people like Wemyss. Left to your own devices you pick up foxy barristers with Craft Addictions. Don't look to me when your dance card is only half full ;-)

It is presently about 2°C here in the metro New York area, and has been alternating between snow and sleet most of last night and into today. It is predicted to continue to do so into the middle of tonight, with lows around -5°C.

I believe we made 44 yesterday (last I looked it was 43.8). Cherry and I went with Push to see Milk at a special JoyFM screening last night - when we came out it was still well over 30 (I believe possibly still over 35 from friends' reports late last night, but I was too hot to care). We ate icecream on Lygon St, and didn't move until the shop closed up and we were the last people sitting on the last remaining table on the footpath.

The house is like a tomb, because the evaporative cooler can only do so much - so it's better to just close it off and close everything up and hide. I'll have to turn my laptop off shortly because it will just make the living room hot.

It's 7.53am and already 33.7. We're expecting at least 43 for the next two days.

I want to emigrate to the UK nao puhleeze?

This post made me sad about my life.

There is so much snow on the ground here they had to shut down my school half way through the day because the road and sidewalk conditions were so bad!

I'm just curious, is it really humid where you are as well? Like I used to live in the desert and it would get up to 110, but it felt better than in like 85 degree weather with humidity! It is most strange I think...

Wow. That's pretty terrible. I think the hottest it ever gets where I live is about 40ish, but the humidity stays at least 80% for most of the summer, and the temp rarely goes below 25-30, even at night. I'll happily send you some of the 5 degree rain we got yesterday, though :)

PS HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

The weather is making me really sad. And hot, obviously. But also sad. It's weird: hot weather makes me sad, cold/rainy weather makes me happy. People (particularly Australians) think I'm nuts. Even my friend who loves summer thinks that it's too hot at the moment, though. I did my grocery shopping on Tuesday, and when I opened the freezer to get mini quiches, I actually sighed out loud. People were looking.

AND HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!! ♥ Hope you have a wonderful day, somewhere very very cold (your supermarket freezer suggestion sounds good). :)

You know whose fault this weather is, right?

All those doubters who were just in the middle of saying "Well obviously the theory of global warming is disproved by the fact that 2008-2009 is turning out to be one of the coolest summers on rec-" and have now gone completely quiet. They jinxed us, the bastards.
